Barrow Microfluidics Laboratory
The Barrow Microfluidics Laboratory undertakes research, development and prototyping of devices for fluid & particle manipulation in microfabricated capillary systems, especially for chemical separations and synthesis. Emphasis has been placed on ultrasonic particle manipulation & fluid mixing, emulsification, bioencapsulation & multiphase flow. New work includes microreactor design and scale-out manifold geometries, & microfabricated tissue engineering supports.
Xtreme Laser Facility
The Xtreme Laser Facility accommodates a unique industrial hybrid 157nm / femtosecond laser micromachining tool designed for Lab-on-a-Chip microfluidic, microreactor, photonic & separations devices. Also, custom microscale geometries in any material can be structured.

metaFAB Nanotechnology
metaFAB has worked on the synthesis of carbon nanoparticles and various forms of both macroporous and nanoporous silicon and is developing procedures for the production of nanorods, tubes and spheres. Some results of these works are show in the images above. Work such as this is undertaken on slightly longer timescales than, for instance, hourly or day-rate analytics, metrology, and laser micromachining.
