The Company prides itself on the strength of its relationships with its surgeons and professional healthcare customers, with whom its name is synonymous with high standards of performance, innovation and trust. The Company operates in 32 countries around the world generating annual sales in 2006 of nearly $2.8 billion.
The Smith & Nephew Research Centre is based in York (UK) providing research and development expertise for the Global Business Units across the Group. Collaboration with world leaders in scientific research is at the heart of the Centre’s open innovation strategy to create cost-effective new regenerative therapies for the company.
Operating out of the Research Centre, the Smith & Nephew Technical Services Group (TSG) provides world-class multi-disciplinary expertise and facilities backed by the quality and service to be expected from a Blue Chip company. The TSG brings together a range of analytical techniques to solve problems at the interface between biology and physics. For example the interaction of cells and bacteria with biomaterial surfaces can be studied by physical techniques such as high resolution SEM, AFM, IR & Raman Spectroscopy, but also by biological assays such as cell proliferation and adhesion, antimicrobial efficacy testing and histology. Biological problems are often much more complex and challenging than their counterparts in the physical world; so even if the same tools are used (e.g. a microscope), the preparation and interpretation of results often requires specialized knowledge. The TSG has decades of experience with biological systems, whether they be biomaterials, cells or bacteria.
Key measurement and analysis capabilities include:
- Microscopy: SEM/EDX, TEM, AFM, LM and confocal
- Chromatography: LC, GC, LC/MS-MS, GC/MS, GC/HS, SEC, IC
- Spectroscopy: IR, Raman, NMR, UV/Vis, CD
- Bioanalytical services: cell culture, flow cytometry, genomics, proteomics
- Histology: bone and soft tissue, μCT
- Microbiology: log reduction, zone of inhibition, bacterial barrier
- Materials testing: biomechanics, DSC, DMTA, particle size
