QinetiQ is one of the world’s leading global defence technology and security companies. Founded in July 2001 from the majority of the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA), the laboratories of the UK MOD, QinetiQ has grown internationally, with around 11,500 employees in the UK and US, many of them internationally acclaimed experts, providing government and commercial customers sophisticated resources to create, evaluate, test, and deliver technology-based services, solutions and products.

QinetiQ has an incomparable track record in the fields of microelectronics and optics and has received 13 Queen's Awards since 1979 for its pioneering research and development in areas including the invention of liquid-crystal displays (LCDs), infra-red sensors and microwave radar. With many years experience in the processing, preparation and characterisation of semiconductor materials (including III-V and Si(Ge) based materials), QinetiQ has combined and inherited the technology and the expertise from government defence research sites throughout the UK.
The QinetiQ Advanced Analytics and MicroSystems group based in Malvern is a CEMMNT core partner. The microsystems team is the largest in the UK, comprising 40 scientists and engineers with a substantial asset base including silicon clean room processing facilities and extensive measurement and characterisation equipment. A comprehensive range of techniques for the analysis of materials and devices is combined with unrivalled problem solving expertise spanning electronic, optical, optoelectronic and photonic materials, processes and devices, as well as metals, surface coatings, ceramics, polymers, biomaterials, nanomaterials and environmental analysis.
Major measurement and analysis capabilities include:
- Secondary ion mass spectrometry
- High resolution transmission electron microscopy
- Scanning electron microscopy with field emission and X-ray microanalysis
- X-ray diffractometry
- Single-crystal and double-crystal X-ray topography
- Atomic force microscopy
