The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the United Kingdom's national standards laboratory, an internationally respected and independent centre of excellence for R&D, and knowledge transfer in measurement and materials science. In global, knowledge-driven markets, competitiveness depends upon solving measurement problems. NPL's consultancy, collaborative R&D, bespoke testing and validation services assist industry with product and process development.
CEMMNT provides industry with open access to NPL extensive equipment and knowledge base. Scientists in the fields of dimensional metrology, optical metrology and nanomaterials are integral to the CEMMNT team. NPL’s problem solving capability makes the organisation ideally suited to undertake complex multi-disciplinary projects working with other CEMMNT partners. NPL can additionally develop and calibrate standards for any measurement technique.
CEMMNT has enabled NPL to invest in new state of the art technology including Atomic Force Microscopes, Coordinate Measuring Machine, Transmission Electron Microscopy enhancements and Vibrometry. NPL has a number of in-house CEMMT research projects aimed at extending the boundaries of existing measurement technologies. A Coordinate Measuring Machine is under construction with new hybrid, mechanical and optical probes. Innovative methods are being developed for the measurement of the rheological properties of liquids using piezoelectric devices and the mechanical properties of solids using a nano-mechanical instrument.
