CLEAN ROOM AT TAYLOR HOBSON
New Facility Represents £1.3 Million Government Investment
in UK Centre of Excellence in Metrology for Micro and Nano Technologies
LEICESTER, ENGLAND, January 15, 2008
Lord Sainsbury of Turville, former Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Science and Innovation, today dedicated the new £1.3 million CEMMNT clean room at AMETEK Taylor Hobson’s Leicester, England, headquarters. The facility is an expansion of Taylor Hobson’s Centre of Excellence laboratory at Leicester, which provides open access measurement support, problem solving, training and advice to UK manufacturing and research companies through the CEMMNT (Centre of Excellence in Metrology for Micro and Nano Technologies) partnership. The facility additionally includes a UKAS accredited laboratory for calibration of standards and test pieces.
The new clean room, which consists of Class 7 (10,000) and Class 4 (10) areas, is equipped with the latest metrology instrumentation for micro and nano technologies (MNT) including:
• 3D optical profilometry with sub Angstrom resolution
• Large aperture phase stepping interferometer for large optical components
• Spectrophotometry for analysis of thin films and optical properties
• Stylus profilometry with nanometre resolution over a 200 mm traverse
• Roundness & cylindrical geometry measurement and 3D mapping

The worldwide market for nanotechnology is estimated to grow to £1 trillion by 2013. In his opening speech, Lord Sainsbury emphasized the benefits that open access organizations such as CEMMNT provide in accelerating commercialization of products embedding micro and nanotechnologies.
