CEMMNT updates TEM - EELS Capabilities
CEMMNT is pleased to announce that it has recently upgraded its Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) with a Gatan Tridiem ER energy loss filter (GIF).
The existing Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) instrument at The National Physical Laboratory (JEOL FX2000) has been upgraded, thanks to the CEMMNT program, with a GIF tridium energy loss filter. This extends the capabilities of TEM into the realm of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). This improves the capabilities of traditional TEM by:
1. Obtaining Better Images
Using EELS to filter the TEM signal allows images with better resolution and contrast. This allows a significant improvement in the imaging of materials composed of light elements (C, O, N etc).
Below are two high-resolution images of carbon nanotubes. On the left is the filtered image, notice the greatly improves contrast and image quality.
2. Elemental Analysis
Quantitative analysis of the chemical structure of a sample, even analysis of light elements
3. Chemical Mapping
Mapping of elemental distribution with nanometre resolution.
The left image shows a TEM image of sulpher containing nanoparticles on a holey carbon film. EELS is able to distinguish areas consisting of carbon (middle image) and sulpher (right image).
