EVENT: High Performance Thin-Film Coatings: Ensuring Nanoscale Manufacturing Integrity
CEMMNT (The Centre of Excellence in Metrology for Micro and Nano Technologies) and the NanoKTN are set to co-host a brand new and exclusive event on 30th November 2010 focusing on the current challenges and opportunities for the development of new processes, materials, and measurement technologies in the thin-films and coatings industry.

The Increasingly aggressive demands of important manufacturing sectors have fuelled the emergence of new functional coatings, requiring innovative thin-film processing technologies. Whether for thermal barrier coatings, wear protection, enhancing the service life of tooling, or protection from thermal and atmospheric influences, these important new materials need to perform consistently well at thicknesses down to the submicron range, and require specialised processing regimes with the reliability and robustness necessary to confidently control performance characteristics and minimise defects at the molecular and atomic scale.
The development of thin film systems is invariably associated with a range of materials and processing challenges. To address these significant challenges, two of the UK's foremost nanotechnology organisations, CEMMNT and the NanoKTN, have organised an event that brings together leading speakers from industry and academia to present the latest thinking on areas including: high integrity structural coatings, high performance electronic films, and functional patterned surfaces.
In addition to the excellent networking opportunities, this unique event also features a walk-around exhibition with manufacturers of processing and measurement and characterisation equipment available throughout the day to discuss current and future requirements with attending companies.
The latest in a series of exclusive events held by CEMMNT exploring the application of micro and nano technologies, this latest event follows on from the success of CEMMNT's recent 'Nanotechnology Innovations for High Performance Motorsport' event held last month in Cranfield. With over 120 delegates in attendance, the event effectively explored the challenges and benefits of applying the latest innovation in nanotechnology to the highly competitive and highly innovative sector of motorsport.
Martyn Mann, Technical Director at Millers Oils, winners of the 'Most Innovative New Motorsport Product' award at the recent World Motorsport Symposium, commented on CEMMNT's recent event, saying: "We found the event very positive. It has certainly opened several doors for us". With a wide range of high-profile motorsport companies in attendance from Mercedes HPE to Williams F1, the event also explored areas such as nanoscale coatings and composites. Karl Rakos, Surface Metrologist at DuPont Teijin Films, a company specialising in film products across a wide range of markets, also commented on the significance of the event, adding: "I enjoyed the whole day, very worthwhile".
